Keeping in mind the security situation in the cyber world and how it has affected the world’s economy a need of a secure connectivity solution was always there. So at last the network professionals have come up with a solution that is capable to keep the cyber criminals and hackers at bay.

This solution is VPN or Virtual Private network. A VPN is a type of connection in which a virtually dedicated line is connected over the Internet for the user and this may be called a network. This private network is virtually in nature i.e. no specified line is for the user rather the path that is followed is made private for the session and thus the name Virtual Private Network comes from there. In this network the data sent is encrypted so that no intruder can simply hack the network and know about the message sent.

VPN Tunneling:

VPN tunneling is the method by which a VPN usually works. A tunnel can be thought of a line that has to be laid before the session starts. This is done in two ways, voluntary tunneling and compulsory tunneling.

In Voluntary Tunneling the tunnel is created after the user connects to an ISP and then sends a request to the server for the tunnel. In Compulsory Tunneling the ISP already has a VPN connection setup. So when a user demands for an ordinary connection he is directed to a VPN connection.

There are basically three types of protocols that are used for tunneling in VPN. They are listed below.

i.            Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

ii.            Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).

iii.            Internet Protocol Security (IPSec).

All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. So choose the right tunneling protocol for your VPN when buying a VPN Connection.
